A Review of Urbody Co. Apparel

I initially came across this brand through an Instagram ad. Early on I was intrigued but I didn’t initially engage.

I had a million things going on and I wasn’t really aware of where I was heading gender-wise. I just found their products and messaging interesting but I didn’t jump in and try anything.

As I started realizing that all the crazy leggings colors and all the shiny fabric was hard to build a wardrobe around and I started wearing women’s leggings and cotton blends I thought I might give their leggings a try.

The Urbody Co Tucking Legging

My first purchase was their tucking legging. Honestly given my recent blog post you’d think I was interested in the tuck aspect. I wasn’t. I was interested in finding an affordable pair of leggings that would work well with my anatomy.

Women’s leggings are great. You can’t beat their pricing and the material and stitching are often way better than the brands built for men. I figured that Urbody Co’s leggings might work better for me from a fashion perspective because they were just simple black leggings with a gusset.

I realized from reading their description that they included a built-in thong - which I thought would be interesting so I purchased a pair of medium-sized leggings, tossed in a cropped t-shirt so I could get free shipping, and waited for the products to arrive.

The first thing I noticed was the t-shirt was way too small for my frame. My wife loves it though! The fabric was wonderful with a great feel and stretch. I just needed to size up. Probably would do better with an XL than the medium I bought. Sam now wears the t-shirt all the time and it looks great on her.

The second thing I noticed was how awesome the leggings were and are. The Material is amazing. They feel great and have a wonderful stretch and a near-matte finish, just a bit of shine. Wearing them was even better. They weren’t too short in the leg, which is another issue that happens with women’s leggings. These leggings were not too short.

Also, the gusset in the crotch meant that they fit much better providing a snug fit without digging up and into my glutes. They have an excellent waist band which is nice and thick with a snug but not too tight compression to really stay in place. Lastly, they are high-waisted so they helped me feel like my waistline was more femme which was great for building outfits.

The issue that I had to solve initially was the built-in thong. It was sewn into the waistline and there was a gap between the bottom of the thong strap and the gusset of the leggings. This meant that when the thong was in place the legging’s crotch was hanging down between my legs. If I pulled the leggings up to get the fit I wanted with my legs and crotch the extra material would bunch up because I could not pull the waist of the leggings any higher as the thong was limiting how high I could pull the waist.

The whole thing just didn’t work. I could understand what Urbody Co was trying to do but honestly, it didn’t work for my preferences. But the leggings were so fantastic.

So I carefully cut the thong out of the leggings and BAMM. The Urbody Co Tucking Leggings are now one of my favorite pairs of leggings.

In the first order, I also grabbed one of their thongs. How could I not buy a thong? They are my favorite kind of underwear!

My experience with the thong was that I was not ready for gender-inclusive underwear at the time.

The flat front and wide gusset meant they were tighter and narrower than I was used to and they don’t have a pouch. I felt like I didn’t fit inside them and they just felt uncomfortable.

I also wasn’t thrilled with the lace work across the top of the thong. They are a very vibrant red color and my wife was weirded out with how girly they looked. I left them in my underwear drawer and would only toss them on if I was low on clean laundry.

Coming out as nonbinary changed a lot of things

Fast forward a year or more and I had come a long way both with Sam and our marriage but also with my neighbors and friends. I was really coming into my gender expression and embracing the femme side a lot more and feeling really happy with my nonbinary femme vibes.

Again it was an Instagram for the Urbody Co Gaff that pulled me back into the brand.

The gaff, in my mind, would really help me figure out how to manage my bulge in leggings. I spent a lot of time thinking about it. Ruminating and ruminating. By the time I was ready - they were out of stock!

Finally, I pulled the trigger over their Black Friday sale when they announced they were back in stock.

It took a few weeks to arrive.

The Urbody Co Gaff

At first, I was frustrated. I recall pulling them out of the packaging and thinking “Oh snap! These are so small!”

I had, like I normally do, bought a size medium. They have thin string-like straps and a small front panel and I could tell they were going to be small on me. Maybe too small…

The fabric like every other garment I have from Urbody Co was excellent. They felt great in my hands and the craftmanship and construction were excellent. The front panel interior has a wonderful brushed cotton feel with a nylon outer layer.

I pulled them on and was surprised that they fit. But I struggled with getting myself to stay in them comfortably. They are underwear designed to reduce your bulge and tuck but I couldn’t get my tuck to work. I was discouraged.

It wasn’t until I started pairing them with the Urbody Co Tucking Thong that I started to get the fit and appearance that I was going for. I got even better at it when I started to incorporate a FuFu Clip. Read my previous blog post for more on that.

Final Thoughts On Urbody Co Gender Inclusive Underwear

Now that I have a system all figured out I do have a few notes to share on the thong and gaff from Urbody Co. Starting with a medium was the right choice for me. They certainly fit me and they work to achieve the look I am going for but now I honestly think they are too big. Figuring out my technique, especially with the feminization of the FuFu clip I released going a bit tighter would be very beneficial. I intend to order another set of both the tucking thong and the gaff but get them in a size small and see how that goes.

Also, I am still not a huge fan of the lace. I don’t mind it but it is not a selling point and it certainly doesn’t enhance the fit or function of the garment. They offer a different thong with a higher waist that doesn’t have the lace and I might try that in a small instead, but honestly, it’s certainly not a deal breaker.

My biggest concern with sizing down the gaff will be that the front panel gets too small. My current issue with the gaff in a size medium is that the side straps are just a tad bit too long. I can tension the underwear to fit in a wonderfully compressive hold but the straps stretch and release the tension. I feel a size small would fix this issue but may cause a separate issue if the front panel is too small.

All in all, I love what I have achieved using these two pairs of underwear.

I can absolutely credit Urbody Co. for helping me achieve the look and feel of leggings with a crop top. Dialing in the outfit has given me the confidence to wear it out in public and that alone has been life-changing.

Feeling gender euphoria is a real thing and I can say that as simple as underwear is it was a major element of getting me to a place where I feel like I can safely express myself in public.
